How To Care For Your Leather Shag Rug

The leather shag rug has grown in popularity in recent times because they are versatile and blend with just about any décor. They are constructed of strips of leather that are grouped together and tucked into a study backing, usually consisting of cotton. The result is a shaggy rug that will provide great cushion and comfort. However, leather rugs are going to be more delicate than other shag rugs and require special care. Leather shag rugs should not be used in area that gets a lot of traffic. It is better to use a more durable area rug in these places. To make your leather shag rug last longer and keep in cleaner, you need to place them strategically throughout your home. They work very well in rooms like home offices or guest rooms.
Leather shag rugs can be found in just about every color imaginable, from black and brown to red or pink. You can choose a brighter color to add a pop of color to any room. More natural colored leather shag rugs can blend well in to just about any color scheme. They can add color and texture to your living space while giving your floor added comfort. While they were expensive when they first came out, now many manufacturers, like Flokati rugs, are offering discount prices on leather shag rugs. This will allow you to get the luxury look and feel of a leather shag rug while keeping to your decorating budget.

The most convient way to clean a leather shag rug is by picking it up and shakeing it out on a regular basis. Since the density of the leather pieces is not high, debris and dirt will easily fall off. This may not be sufficient to get everything, especially if the rug is a darker color such as black or brown, you will need to use your vacuums attachment for upholstery.  If you have a large area rug to clean you can choose to just spot clean as needed or clean the entire rug. You have to remember, however, that you should not use the actual vacuum on shaggy rugs made of leather because the small pieces of leather can get caught in the vacuum. This will not only damage your rug but your vacuum as well. Spot cleaning will not expose your rug to the rotating bristles of the vacuum.

If your leather shag rug is too large to shake or spot clean you may want to invest in a reversible rug. This will allow you to get twice as much use out of your leather shag rug before you need to worry about cleaning it. Regardless of wether you spot clean, shake your rug out, or invest in a reversible leather shag rug, you will have to periodically have it cleaned by a professional. It is dangerous to try and clean your leather shag rug yourself with chemicals. These chemicals, if not used right, can damage your rug and ruin the color. For these reasons it is always best to leave this kind of cleaning up to those who are experienced with cleaning leather rugs.
